Make money

Your World - a blog on sports and money

Design:

Reviewing the design of this blog comes down to reviewing a wordpress theme that it uses (which can easily be identified from the web site source as deep blue). That said, there's nothing necessarily wrong with using an existing theme for a site, if it serves its purpose, and it can still be modified to make additional improvements. Regardless of it using a theme, though, there's still something to be said about the block positioning choices made.

The theme itself certainly looks good, professional and easy on the eyes. There's hardly any fault to be found in it functionality wise either. Title, description are clear and prominent, blog entry titles, date of publishing, category of the entry and the number of comments each have their neat position. Social bookmarking buttons look like they could be positioned a little neater, as tell a friend button seems needlessly distanced from the bookmark button, but that's a minor observation.

Actual blog post pages contain an embedded google ad right above the content, but without any sort of a delimiter. It would probably look better centered and with at least a horizontal line to make them feel more in place and distinct from the blog post, which wouldn't necessarily detract any of the attention it is meant to receive at that position.

Comments are styled in such a way that the author information and avatar is more eye catching than the actual comment, due to a sharp contrast between the white background of the comment text and full blue background of the comment info area. Perhaps that blue color could be lighter.

Aside from the google search and ad box, the sidebar contains a single more prominent column displaying popular articles, which seems like a good thing. However the columns below seem somewhat disorganized. Pages block doesn't seem necessary since there already is a hard to miss horizontal main menu displaying the same exact links. Archive block displays twice. And the second column is too empty compared to the first one. I would suggest removing the Pages block and the extra Archive block, moving the Topics block at the top of the first sidebar column with Links, Meta and calendar below it and then putting Tags, Polls and "Who Visit Me" blocks to the right column in that order.

In addition to these suggestions I would also propose making further customizations to the theme, at least in terms of the color scheme in the interest of making the blog seem more unique.

Focus:

This blog's title is quite vague, implying topics that describe the world of its audience. This would indicate a general nature of the blog. The description, "Latest updates on News, Views and Earning Ideas" confirms this suspicion, as it allows for a truly wide variety of topics. It can hardly be determined what exactly will the news and views be about and only the "earning ideas" part suggests a more specific nature. The about page doesn't do much in terms of further clarifications except providing a more personal tone to it.

Latest entries are mostly about sports related news with an apparent focus on India, with a few money making articles posted in between. This could perhaps make it a suitable resource for indian residents who share interest in both sports related news and some business tips in the same place, but this may be a small niche. Choosing to focus on either sports news or money making tips slanted towards indian audience rather than both at the same time may still prove to be a better formula for long term success of this blog.

Content:

The first post was made on February 4. 2009 and since then there have been 14 more posts. Needless to say this blog is getting filled up with content pretty fast, which is usually a good sign. On further inspection, the writing style makes it clear that the author is not a native english speaker and there are occasional spelling and grammar errors. However, some posts sound differently than others, almost as if they are written by a native english speaker. At first this seemed to indicate that some posts may have partly been put together by content copied from other sources, but since I couldn't find any exact copies it seems fairly unique and may have only paraphrased other sources (which is a fair and common practice in the news industry).

So far more useful content can be found for sports fans than for those looking for money making tips, but since this blog is just getting started, and is being updated so frequently, this may soon change. If you are an indian resident, it may be worth watching.

Overall:

This is a young blog, but it is quickly being filled with potentially interesting or useful content on either sports (with a bent on indian sports scene) or making money online. This duality of focus could be a disadvantage unless a way is found to develop a common thread between them, a starting point for which may be the focus on the predominantly indian audience.

Blog uses an existing theme, albeit a good one. With some improvements with regards to positioning of sidebar blocks and adverts inside of blog entries it would offer a solid presentation. For it's long term success, in addition to taking care of the focus issue it may be necessary to work on making it more unique as well as eventually hosting it under its own domain name.
