1dressup.com: An excellent girls games site

Design:

Simple, but fairly functional design greets us at 1dressup.com, unsurprisingly dominated by a cheerful pink color scheme and immediately showing a few dozen colorful thumbnails of newest girls games, so girls can without confusion jump straight to play. Beneath it there is a bar with a number of links referring to other game sites, most of which are also about girls games, which can be useful. However, while the purpose of the bar may be self evident (it links to more games, basically), perhaps there could be a way to make it more explicit, just in case, by adding a title at the beginning of it saying something like "More games:". The bar could also use a little more padding since the list dots of the links almost touch the edges.

Beneath the links bar there is an untitled text section which, chances are, wont interest the kids, at least considering its length. This is why its positioning on the page as below the fold seems like a good decision. However, the text appears on every page of the site, which might not be necessary while it may detriment the uniqueness of each page (some search engines don't like duplicate content). One could assume, though, that the reason for this is to have the parent's pitch available even when someone links directly to the sub section rather than the homepage of the site, but if this was the case, perhaps a better solution could be to create a link instead, leading to the text section of the homepage (an in-page bookmark using an anchor tag with a "name" attribute).

The main menu of the site reveals that there is more for girls to find here than just dress up games. Since there isn't much to add here, at the risk of being nitpicking and the interest of being as constructive as possible, I would suggest making the vertical line delimiter between menu items of lighter pink, to be better visible in the lighter part of the menu gradient and a little easier on the eyes. These same vertical lines also seem to cross over the actual menu height, which can be fixed by simply changing the vertical padding to 4 pixels (in the .menutext CSS class).

Moving on, google advertisement's on sub pages could perhaps use a little more subtlety as right now it takes the bulk of above the fold space before displaying the actual content. Instead of couple of blocks a horizontal leaderboard or even a standard banner could fit in better. An alternative is not to have any google ads there at all. Since the site doesn't have a lot of textual content a single leaderboard in an already neatly designated advertising area might actually be sufficient. Some of the space saved by lessening or removing these ads could be used to add the title of the section in question (such as "Make up games" at the make up page).

Finally, I have a distinct impression that the site is meant to or could at least visually flow better if all elements beneath the header were centered. The language translation bar, ads below, pagers for surfing through games and the four ad blocks below the text could be centered.

All this said, the design of 1dressup.com is simple, functional and fitting, but the above suggestions may add some further polish to the overall experience.

Focus:

The title and URL of the site themselves make it unmistakably clear what to expect from 1dressup.com. The color scheme is fitting and prominent display of newest available games makes it easy for a girl to jump in and start playing. Menu items are also clear about the other kinds of games that can be found; make up, cooking, decoration and other kinds. The only small complaint that could be made is that the site's title and URL imply only dress up games when in fact it appears to offer a more general variety of games for girls. From an end user perspective this is hardly an issue. There are indeed plenty of dress up games, and the other ones can be considered a nice bonus.

Content:

A girl will likely come here expecting plenty of cool dress up games, and the site certainly delivers, and more. There is a great variety of styles to inspire child's creativity and imagination such as retro dress up, fancy dinner dress up, modern date, urban night, royal, chique, halloween doll and oh so much more. Girls will desert their dolls forever. ;)

There is also a search bar that can be used to search for specific kinds of games, and there are indeed plenty to search through.

Speaking of which, the crucial part appears to be the explanation of the purpose and value of these games and making a point for why should parents allow and encourage their girls to play dress up online, instead of just with their dolls. It's quite true physical dolls cannot provide the kind of variety that these games can, and the point about it contributing to the development of child's imagination and creativity is well made. The text presents a contrast between these games and the many other violent games that can be found on the internet and attempts to ease parent's concerns regarding the more liberal style of some dress ups.

Overall:

1dressup.com is overall an excellent girls games web site. Design is simple, functional and without much clutter, albeit a few minor improvements may still be made to polish it up, especially with regards to advertisements. There is a lot of games to choose from and they are easy to access and start playing. Site's explanation appeals to parents making some good points on the benefits of having their girls play dress up games and easing their concerns.

And considering the competition that can be immediately found on google, 1dressup.com does deserve a higher rank. It stands out with its simplicity, focus and has everything one would expect from a dress up games site, and more.
